Sleepless Night In Solanco

 December 24, 2020

The Christmas holiday has begun with very little sleep for QFD Volunteers.

At 10:50 pm Wednesday night, Quarryville Borough PD called out a “pile of stuff” on fire at 33 East 4th Street in Quarryville Borough.  Units arrived to a trash fire and extinguished the same.

At 11:49 pm, Truck 57, Engine 574 and 572 responded to a dwelling fire in the 100 block of  Strubel Road in Strasburg Township assisting Strasburg Fire Company.  Chief 5 arrived with a 2.5 story dwelling with fire showing from the 2nd floor and attic.  QFD units worked with multiple mutual aid crews to extinguish the fire, which went to 2 alarms.  Thanks to Gap FC Engine 42-1 for standing by while our units were committed.

At 3:21 am Thursday, as crews were finishing cleaning up from the fire, the pre-alert went out for a house fire in the 100 block of South Summit Avenue in Quarryville Borough.  Units responded immediately and arrived with smoke in the basement of a duplex from a furnace malfunction.  The house was ventilated and the Company was available at 4:05.

After multiple cancelled events, we are finally able to proceed with having our annual Spring Ham Shoot and Gun Raffle on Saturday March 13, 2021. Doors will open by 4:30 pm with the event starting at 5 pm. Obviously, we will be taking extra safety precautions to ensure a fun and safe time.

We will be having 15 ham rounds, 3 cash 50/50 rounds, 2 gun rounds, a ladies round (free) and a kids round (free). And, since we did not get to have our fall shoot, we will be having the Veterans / Active Military round that is free to all veterans and active military members.

There will be 50/50 raffles, table gun raffles, door prizes and food. We will also have our Spring Gun Raffle tickets for sale, and the winners will be pulled at the end of the shoot.

We hope that you will come out and support us, as this is the first real fund raiser we have had since mid-2020.

And remember, you can still get gun tickets online by using the Donate button on www.qfd57.com.

Maintenance Day 2021

If you are a follower of our Company, you will know that every February we have our annual maintenance day where we service all of our apparatus. This year was no different.

Members started at 7 am with breakfast made and served by our Special Division. During the course of the next 7 hours, the 40+ volunteers completed the following:

Oil changes on several rigs. We now test our oil yearly and if it is ok, we don't change it.
Oil and fuel filters on all apparatus and generators
Fluid changes as needed
New windshield wiper blades
Changed rear gear oil
Portable equipment maintenance (saws etc.)
Hand tool maintenance
Interiors cleaned on all rigs
All rigs washed

This in-station maintenance keeps our rigs in top condition and helps us to locate small problems before they become big, expensive issues. Doing all this ourselves also saves us quite a bit of money, and it is a great time for all of our members to work together.

Thanks to the Special Division members who took care of making breakfast and lunch, and to the various businesses that donated products to help us complete these tasks. Thanks especially to all of our volunteers that gave the majority of their Saturday to the Company.

Once you are done shoveling, scraping and removing snow and ice, take a minute to go to our website at www.qfd57.com, click on the DONATE button and buy yourself some Spring Gun Raffle Tickets. We will fill them out and mail you the stubs. In the last week since we started offering this, we have sold over 150 tickets online. This is a big boost and a great way to get tickets if you live out of the area.

And, we are planning on having our in-person Ham Shoot on Saturday March 13th. The full article will be posted when we have the advertising material, but mark your calendar. This will be the first event since Fall 2019.
