At 5:32 pm, Truck 57 was alerted as part of the first alarm assignment for a chicken house fire at 83 Douts Hill Road in Martic Township assisting Rawlinsville Volunteer Fire Company. As members were responding to the station, a large column of smoke could be seen from the area. Assistant 58 immediately called for additional tankers, putting Tanker 57 on the assignment.
On arrival, crews found a 600′ X100′ chicken house fully involved in between two similar houses. Crews began protecting exposures and fire attack. Truck 57 set up and flowed water on one end of the house until being re-positioned to a more advantageous spot where we could cover more of the building along with Truck 50 Willow Street Fire Co. Tanker 57 came in the driveway and acted as a nurse tanker to Engine 531 (The Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company) and also supplied Truck 57.
Multiple units worked the scene or in the water supply for several hours (as of this writing at 11:35 pm, crews are still on scene). Many other units were transferred to other fire stations.
Thanks to Tom Amico for the photos, and to the QFD members that handled 2 other incidents while the Truck and Tanker were out. Also, thanks to White Horse Fire Company – Station 49 for standing by in Quarryville with Tanker 49.
