At 11:20 pm, Engine 574, 572 and Tanker 57 were dispatched to assist the Robert Fulton Fire Company on a barn fire at 276 Scott Road in Little Britain Township. Chief 89 responded and was advised that the caller was reporting a 50'X500" chicken house with a fire inside.
Chief 89 arrived with light smoke showing. Engine 89-1 laid about 500' of 5" supply line in and stretched a line to the inside finding fire in the shaving on the floor. Engine 574's crew began searching for additional fire, finding extension into the walls and ceiling. Another line was stretched and the fire extinguished quickly.
Engine 572 set up a draft for water supply and Tanker 57 assisted in the tanker shuttle. Rescue 57 was dispatched later, and the crew assisted with overhaul.
In all, several hundred square feet of shavings on the floor and about 10' wide of walls and ceiling across the entire house. Unfortunately, several thousand turkey chicks perished from the heavy smoke.
QFD units operated for just over 2 hours, with another hour of cleanup. Thanks to Tom Amico for the photos, and Willow Street Engine 501 for standing by.
