At 1:32 pm Tuesday, Rawlinsville Volunteer Fire Company and Robert Fulton Fire Company were dispatched to the area of Scalpy Hollow Road in Drumore Township for an unknown type fire. After searching for a while, units arrived on a large working woods fire in the Scalpy Hollow/Fishing Creek North Nature Preserve. This prompted a large response from many mutual aid companies.
On scene, Brush 57 and Squad 571 assisted with fire attack on the steep hillside. Crews helped to rake an initial fire line around the right flank and head of the fire, and then stretched lines to extinguish.
Brush 57 was used to draft from Fishing Creek (after crews built a stone, ladder and tarp dam) and use the high pressure pump to supply several handlines. Limited four-wheel-drive-only access made things even more difficult. In all, Brush 57 pumped for several hours, we used 500′ of 1″ forestry line, 6 rakes and 2 pulaskis from Brush 57.
Squad 572 and QFD Fire Police blocked traffic on Scalpy Hollow Road for the duration of the incident.
Thanks to all the members that responded, and to those that were at the station when we got back to help get the units back in service quickly.
