On Saturday, QFD was invited to attend the Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company 50th anniversary celebration and parade. Polk Township Fire Company is located in Kresgeville, Monroe County PA. Quarryville and Polk Township have a time in history that we would like to share.
In the late 1960’s (1969 we believe), QFD member Henry Martin (pictured next to the engine) had a hunting camp in the area of Polk Township. He was aware of their need for a fire engine, and QFD happened to be selling our 1954 GMC Tanker, so a deal was struck for $1,500.00. A group of members delivered the engine and that was that. Hen visited them a few times on and off in the early years of their fire company.
So, fast forward to this past weekend. FF Kevin Singles and FF Tom Worrell made the 2 hour trip with Squad 571 to celebrate with them and share our historical connection. They had a great time, and according to some of their founding members, they still owe us $1,000.00 on the engine !! I guess after 50 years we will write that off.
A lot of the information and details have faded to memory after 50 years, but if you have anything to add to the story (or any corrections), please put them in the comments of our Facebook page.
Congratulations to Polk Township on 50 years of service, and we will be there on your 100th
